Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid used as a patch, has been showing up in bags of heroin or cocaine without a buyer's knowledge often. The high is euphoric and the product is cheap and strong, making it popular among those who try it. It's also a lot more deadly. Spikes in deaths from the drug have increased across the country—by 300 percent in Philadelphia between 2013 and 2014, and 48 overdoses and 12 deaths since March 2016 in Northern California.
